Amplification of Productivity Shocks: Why Vacancies Don’t Like to Hire the Unemployed?

چکیده

In this paper I study a new amplification mechanism in search models that arises when workers can choose to search on the job and, despite the fact that all workers are ex-ante identical, employers prefer to hire already employed workers for endogenous reasons. The motivation for on-the-job search in the model is job-shopping, where workers look for jobs they find appealing, and the appeal of a job to the worker is not observed by the firm. In equilibrium, workers arriving from unemployment are more likely to leave a job for a more appealing job, and, knowing this, firms prefer to hire already employed, as opposed to unemployed, workers. Employers’ preference for hiring already employed workers introduces a new amplification mechanism into search models. This is because vacancies in the model with such preference respond more to aggregate shocks than in the standard search model due to the fact that employed workers reduce their search intensity in a recession, thereby making it less attractive for firms to post vacancies. Using simulations of the proposed model, I explore the extent that the presence of job-to-job transitions can help in explaining the volatility of unemployment and vacancies over the business cycle through this new amplification mechanism. The simulation results show that, for standard parameter values, this new mechanism can generate five times more amplification compared to the baseline model. Amplification of Productivity Shocks: Why Don’t Vacancies Like to Hire the Unemployed?

In this paper, I study a new amplification mechanism in search models that arises when workers can choose to search on the job and when, for endogenous reasons, employers reap higher benefits from contacting employed searchers. The motivation for on-the-job search in the model is job shopping, where workers look for jobs they find appealing and the appeal of a job to the worker is not observed ...

Efficient Search on the Job and the Business Cycle

We build a directed search model of the labor market in which workers’ transitions between unemployment, employment, and across employers are endogenous. We prove the existence, uniqueness and efficiency of a recursive equilibrium with the property that the distribution of workers across employment states affects neither the agents’ values and strategies nor the market tightness. Because of thi...

Working Paper No. 10-24 Business Cycles in the Equilibrium Model of Labor Market Search and Self-insurance

I introduce risk-averse preferences, labor-leisure choice, capital, individual productivity shocks, and market incompleteness to the standard Mortensen-Pissarides model of search and matching and explore the model’s cyclical properties. There are four main findings. First and foremost, the baseline model can generate the observed large volatility of unemployment and vacancies with a realistic r...

Business Cycles in the Equilibrium Model of Labor Market Search and Self-Insurance

The standard Mortensen-Pissarides model of search and matching is extended by introducing capital, risk-averse workers, labor-leisure choice and lack of complete markets to insure away unemployment shocks. The business cycle properties of the model with aggregate productivity shocks are explored, with an emphasis on labor market dynamics. In particular, I ask whether the model can replicate the...

Unemployment and Human Capital∗

The paper explores the interaction between sector-specific human capital accumulation and sector-specific productivity or demand shocks. Our objective is to better understand the determinants of skill and experience premia, the costs of displacement for workers with long job tenure, and the nature of unemployment among such workers. For example, our model suggests why skilled workers can remain...
